Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve pairs the tallest dunes in North America with the alpine backcountry of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in southern Colorado. A backpacking permit is required for overnight trips, covering either the open dunefield interior or one of the designated Sand Ramp Trail campsites. Popular summer dates fill up, so it pays to book as soon as your date becomes available.
Great Sand Dunes issues its wilderness permits through recreation.gov, and popular passes sell out ahead of the season. Backpacking permits open on a rolling 3-month window, advancing each morning at 8:00 AM Mountain (7:00 AM Pacific). One reservation covers your whole party (per-site quota), year-round. Permit Ranger watches every pass here and alerts you the moment a sold-out date opens.

How to get a Great Sand Dunes permit
- Choose your backcountry area - either the Dunes Backcountry (camp anywhere in the dunefield interior beyond the day-use ridge) or one of the designated Sand Ramp Trail campsites.
- Watch the rolling window: permits open on a rolling 3-month schedule, advancing each morning at 8:00 AM Mountain (7:00 AM Pacific), so your date becomes bookable roughly three months out.
- Book your permit on recreation.gov the morning your entry date enters the window, since one reservation covers your whole party.
- If your dates are sold out, keep watching - cancellations reopen sites, and Permit Ranger can alert you the moment a watched site frees up.
