Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park protects one of the steepest, deepest, and narrowest gorges in North America, where the Gunnison River carves through sheer walls in southwestern Colorado. A wilderness permit is required to descend into the inner canyon overnight, issued for one of three steep, unmaintained scramble routes - Warner, Gunnison, and Tomichi. Quota is limited and the routes are demanding, so competitive summer dates can be hard to secure.
Black Canyon of the Gunnison issues its wilderness permits through recreation.gov, and popular passes sell out ahead of the season. Inner-canyon wilderness permits for May 1 – Oct 31 sell in two releases at 8:00 AM Mountain (7:00 AM Pacific): Apr 1 (May–Jul entries) and Jul 1 (Aug–Oct). Quota is per person per route. Nov–Apr permits are first-come-first-served in person at the visitor center. Permit Ranger watches every pass here and alerts you the moment a sold-out date opens.
