Who writes Permit Ranger

Casey leads research and editorial for Permit Ranger. Every permit guide, release calendar entry, and quota-season table on this site is checked against live recreation.gov availability data before it is published, and rechecked whenever the monitoring system spots a change.

Casey is a longtime backpacker who has been through the sold-out-at-7-AM routine for Sierra, Cascades, and Colorado permits more times than anyone should be. That experience is why the guides focus on the details that actually decide whether you get a permit: exact release times, quota semantics, and how fast each entry point books up.

How the research works

Permit Ranger polls recreation.gov availability around the clock for every covered permit area. Release rules are verified by watching real payloads at release boundaries, not by copying rec.gov's help pages (which are often stale). Demand scores are computed from observed booked-up-ness per entry point, with lead-time awareness and decay, so a score reflects current behavior rather than reputation.

When a fact cannot be verified from live data or an official source, the guides say so instead of guessing. Corrections land as soon as the monitoring system or a reader flags them.
