The Central Cascades Wilderness permit covers overnight trips in the Three Sisters, Mount Jefferson, and Mount Washington Wildernesses of Oregon's Deschutes and Willamette National Forests, a landscape of volcanoes, alpine lakes, and Pacific Crest Trail high country. A permit is required for overnight backcountry trips at the area's quota trailheads during the summer season, and the most popular trailheads sell out quickly.

Central Cascades Wilderness issues its wilderness permits through recreation.gov, and popular passes sell out ahead of the season. Quota season is June 15 – October 15: about 40% of each trailhead's overnight quota goes on sale for the whole season in one early-April opening at 7:00 AM Pacific (2026: April 7); the remaining ~60% is released rolling 7 days before entry at 7:00 AM Pacific. Off-season, permits are still required (and still bought on recreation.gov) but have no quota - they never sell out. How to get a Central Cascades Wilderness permit

1. Choose your trailhead (each has its own quota) and your entry date within the quota season, June 15 – October 15.
2. For competitive dates, be ready for the early-April opening at 7:00 AM Pacific, when about 40% of each trailhead's quota goes on sale for the whole season (in 2026 this was April 7).
3. If you miss the season opening, watch for the remaining ~60% of the quota, which is released rolling 7 days before the entry date at 7:00 AM Pacific.
4. Book your permit on recreation.gov under the Central Cascades Wilderness permit (4675311). Outside the quota season, permits are still required but never sell out.
5. If your dates are sold out, keep watching - cancellations return quota to recreation.gov at no set time, and Permit Ranger can alert you when a spot reopens.
