A Grand Canyon backcountry permit covers overnight trips below the rim, from the corridor campgrounds at Bright Angel, Havasupai Gardens, and Cottonwood to the remote designated campsites and at-large use areas deeper in the canyon. It is one of the most sought-after backpacking permits in the country, and popular corridor sites for prime spring and fall dates sell out the moment they release.

Grand Canyon National Park issues its wilderness permits through recreation.gov, and popular passes sell out ahead of the season. Public reservations open on the 1st of each month at 8:00 AM MST (Arizona time) for all start dates in the month 3 months ahead (e.g. Aug 1 opens all of November). Your odds

Since 2024 the park has routed roughly 80 percent of backcountry permits through the monthly early-access lottery, which awards up to 750 applicants a timed booking slot ahead of each public opening. The park does not publish how many people apply each month, so no official win rate exists; the structure alone tells you the corridor campgrounds (Bright Angel, Havasupai Gardens, Cottonwood) on prime spring and fall dates are the hardest draws.

Unofficial estimates from guide services put corridor success in peak season around 1 in 4, and winners get a booking window, not a guaranteed itinerary: what is left when your slot opens depends on the winners ahead of you. Off-corridor routes and summer or winter dates are far easier.

Losing the lottery is not the end. Non-winners get access later in the lottery month, the public opening releases whatever remains, and cancellations trickle back all season. That returning inventory is exactly what Permit Ranger watches.
